About the Image(s)

I took this image in the Kgalagadi Park and it was in midday sun .
This "Lion Portrait" was a rather dull image and I decided that with a painting, I could spruce up the colors , so to speak.
I worked in layers in PS cc and tried to maintain and enhance the fallen tree structure and added some colors to emphasize the lion's face and the same with the background.
Comments/suggestion are most welcome.

The painting is definitely better than the original.
However, I still find the burnt out highlights because of the midday sun, both on the lion & the tree trunk, draws my eyes to that.

What I do like is the way you have rendered the background tree trunk & the rest of the lion.   Posted: 06/06/2018 08:09:45

Gerhard, your painting style works extremely well with this image. I can almost feel the fur on the lion's head and body. I agree with Cyril about the burned out highlights. Other than that, well done.   Posted: 06/16/2018 16:11:24

Creative painting treatment for this photo, Gerhard.

I would add that although I like the color of the tree, it's really pulling my eye to those blues and oranges and away from the lion. Perhaps toning those bright contrasts down on the log would help

I think you got the eyes so beautifully that your heavy rendering of his nose keeps me from being pulled into the eyes. I would lighten the painting strokes on his nose so we don't stop there.   Posted: 06/16/2018 17:20:07

The technique you used is very effective in enhancing the image. It adds life to the image. I agree with Kathy that the color on the log is bit too saturated for my taste and takes away from the lion.   Posted: 06/19/2018 20:43:47

What a great capture and love the casual pose and eyes. I was glad to see others were bothered by the blue in the log. I took it into PS and used hue/saturation and reduced the cyan/blue. Then I used my brush and put the mode (at the top)to color and painted in the same tones as in the lion onto the log . Then to add to your image I went into filter> Stylize > oil filter and put a sight touch of this filter to enhance the fur and log.   Posted: 06/27/2018 02:29:31
