Rounding the Corner by Matt Moses

March 2023 - Rounding the Corner

About the Image(s)

With my daughter dabbling in ski racing this winter I was out with my camera capturing ski race photos of many of the kids racing. l liked this location as I was positioned as they turned towards me with the sun providing some highlights. I really like the view in the goggles that show's where the skier is headed.

Maybe on a bigger screen, I'd really be able to appreciate the goggle reflections, but in this view, most of what I see is the determined body posture to make that turn! That's brilliant! I love the plume of snow from her carving leg. Perhaps the goggle reflections could be enhanced by a change in contrast so it doesn't look so much like the snow surrounding the view, and shows more of the detail within the lenses.   Posted: 03/11/2023 12:31:08

As one who pays with contrast a lot, yeah probably should attempt some localized contrast adjustments to the goggles. :)   Posted: 03/30/2023 17:01:46

Great reflections in the googles and great leading lines. The bright area of snow and many angles make the image interesting.
Perhaps the skier could be a little lighter.   Posted: 03/24/2023 13:11:07

Very nice shot. Interesting that you see the reflection in the goggles as a strong element, while to me the most impactful part is the incredibly determined expression on her face. I agree with Zina that the plume of snow behind her gives a great sense of speed. I also agree with Alec on trying to lighten her image up a little. The other element I found distracting is the gate along the right side, because it is so blurred it is hard to see. I would crop it out (also required a bit of healing brush to avoid cropping off part of the racer).   Posted: 03/30/2023 15:27:50

Thanks for the comments. I had left the gate to be part of the "story" but I agree with you it is best that it is not there.   Posted: 03/30/2023 17:01:07

I agree with Rick about the gate on the left side of image. I took the image a little bit further by adding some blue tint or hue to image using a curves adjustment layer. i went into the blue layer in curves adjustment an added a dot to the dark's so the dark's hue didn't change an then added a dot to the bright area an dragged the line up a little bit. I thought adding some blue to the snow would make image feel more cold like the snow is. So not sure if that is a good thing to add to images or not.   Posted: 03/30/2023 21:17:37
