British Virgin Islands by Alec Chester

May 2022 - British Virgin Islands

About the Image(s)

Here is my photo for May. While in the British Virgin Islands I came across this cottage that was destroyed by Hurricane Irma. I liked the colors and geometry of the place. It was taken with a Canon G3X at 24 mm EFL, ISO 125, f/4.5 at 1/1250 seconds. I cropped it slightly and made minor adjustments in Lightroom with contrast, saturation and clarity.

Alec, this is an image for deep contemplation, and your edits make it easy for the eye and mind to linger. The tranquility of the far view makes the site even more impactful as we view the devastation that produced this abandoned place.   Posted: 05/22/2022 10:17:20

Alec,
Really nice image. I really like the color palette...especially the strong shade of green on the wall, and the sky looks almost like part of a ceiling until you realize the roof is gone. I also think the aspect ratio you picked contributes a lot to the effectiveness of your composition. The only nagging little bit I see is the tiny remnant of what is probably a window along the right edge of the image. I would be inclined either to change the whole composition to show more or all of the window (not my first choice, since I think you have a great composition here), or simply make a tiny adjustment to the crop to shave it off. I did a quick and dirty crop to show you what I mean, taking great care to preserve your aspect ratio and avoid losing more than a tiny sliver of the floor. But I really like the shot, and it's a great reminder of the unique color schemes you see on buildings in the Caribbean, to say nothing of the inviting ocean.   Posted: 05/24/2022 17:00:13
