The Needle's Eye by Samuel Lane

November 2020 - The Needle's Eye

About the Image(s)

This was taken on the Needles Highway between Custer State Park and the Badlands in South Dakota. Shot with D7200, 8mm, 1/125 sec, f18 and ISO of 1000. This is one narrow road called the “Impossible Highway” because supposedly there was no way to cut a road thru this stretch of mountains. There are three single lane tunnels and anything much larger than an regular SUV can’t get thru.

Very interesting geometry and texture. The golden colors are a plus, too. I thought that the sky on the top could use more contrast but I tried and it didn't add much. Looks good in B & W. (See attached.)   Posted: 11/23/2020 14:59:29

Thanks I have it as a B&W print in my folder. I will take another look at the sky.   Posted: 11/23/2020 17:11:48

A great capture Samuel. The colour in the sky blends so well with the aptly named Needle's Eye. Great texture in the rock and I love the tree coming out from the RHS. You may consider cropping out the tree that's just poking through on the bottom left. It come come up well as B&W.   Posted: 11/28/2020 02:03:08

Thanks did not notice that   Posted: 11/28/2020 09:31:58

Initial pass at this I feel its lack impact for me, the tone is all very similar and no strong center of interest. Looking at the b/w conversion I think that has a lot of potential as you have some much texture detail in the rock surface. I'm thinking I must have skipped this road when I was last out in that area of South Dakota.   Posted: 11/28/2020 11:12:55

Thanks it is still a work in progress. I can tell you the road is not for the faint of heart...   Posted: 11/28/2020 13:24:35

I like the texture and color. Agree about the two trees.   Posted: 11/30/2020 22:12:46
