Cubs by Gail McTaggart

October 2020 - Cubs

About the Image(s)

Taken at Melbourne Zoo in between Melbourne's covid lockdowns ( we are still locked down, don't get me started on that!). These 2 snow leopard cubs are 2 of triplets born in February this year, which makes them 5 months old when the photo was taken. It was just on feed time, hence the concentration of what was going on outside the frame. Breakfast was a hind quarter of beef hung from a tree. Mum inspected and sampled the meat first to make sure it was safe. The cubs were then given 'permission' from mum to eat.... then it was a 'free for all'. Lots of growling and a little pushing, they climbed the tree swung off the meat all the time eating away.... there were no fights!

Taken with my Nikon D850 using a cropped sensor. Lens was 28-300mm - ISO /1000 - Shutter 1/400 - f5.6 - 450mm

Hi Gail; I am wondering if this was taken through the glass on the enclosure? I really like this. What did you do in post processing?   Posted: 10/19/2020 23:28:53

Hi Donna
I took this over the fence, there is a bit of a hill so you can look down into the enclosure, not through glass. There was a wire fence behind them which I cloned out... not an easy job!Post processing was cropping, brightening colours, sharpening and removing the fence.
