Rowing in Florence by Alec Chester

October 2020 - Rowing in Florence

About the Image(s)

Here’s my photo for October. It’s a man rowing on the Arno River in Florence, Italy. I liked the reflections in the water particularly.

I took it with a Canon 5 D Mark IV, 1/250 seconds, f/5.6 and 105 mm on a 24-105 mm lens.

I enhanced it modestly in Lightroom.

The reflections are wonderful! My only issue is that I wish we could see the whole boat as it feels a bit too tightly cropped.

What editing did you do in Lighroom? Can you show a "before" image? I ask as I wonder if the highlights need to be subdued a bit.   Posted: 10/23/2020 10:41:08

A great image, the patterns, triangles, diagonal lines and reflections in the water are awesome. Even though the 'rules' say you should leave space to travel into I think this image works well as it is.
Unlike Matt the fact that we don't see the whole boat doesn't bother me.   Posted: 10/23/2020 20:25:38

Matt, Thanks for your thoughts--helpful, as always. Here is the original showing more of the boat with highlights less pronounced.   Posted: 10/26/2020 06:42:35

Thanks for showing the whole image the reflection in the top right of the original photo draws your attention away from the subject. It commands your attention. This is a good effort but agree that I would like to see the complete boat and the boat needs space to travel.   Posted: 10/28/2020 10:50:14
