Rigging by Alec Chester

June 2020 - Rigging

About the Image(s)

This is a photo of the rigging on a French ship that visited Annapolis. It’s an 18th century replica of the Hermione, the French frigate that carried General Marquis de Lafayette to George Washington with news of French aid to the American Revolution. I took it with a Canon EOS M at 1/800, f/10, ISO 200 at 300 mm on a EF 70-300 mm f/4 lens. I then enhanced it in Lightroom by increasing highlights and shadows.

I love the texture and lines (duh) of this image. To me the complimenting blues and oranges accent the texture of the wood. The crisscrossing diagonal lines carry me through a world of danger and excitement. For me this one image tells how complicated and difficult sea travel can be. The image is sharp and clean. To me the only critique would be that I personally would like to see a less dramatic vignette. But that's just me. I think this print belongs in a sailing museum. Nicely done.   Posted: 06/11/2020 13:40:50

You did a great job of capturing in this shot after focusing on the mast I am following the lines to the various pulleys wondering where are they going. The photo is sharp and the color separation between the various shades is great and your use of the existing light is right on. Agree the vignette is a little strong.   Posted: 06/15/2020 12:53:29

The larger masts are complimented by the ropes and pulleys. Makes you wonder if they really need all of that stuff. Because of its very sharp and clean lines the businesses of the image does not take away from it, Well done.   Posted: 06/15/2020 14:59:20

Great capture of the lines and angles and the yellow pulleys, all in such sharp detail and offset by a blue sky that is not too light or too dark.

The framing looks just right, as my eye travels from the smaller pulleys at the bottom of the frame to the yellow sponge and the area above the two mast poles that cross in front and behind the main pole up to the cross bars and yellow pulley at the top.   Posted: 06/21/2020 16:28:26

There are a lot of interesting lines and triangles within this composition. Definitely has enough interest to keep me looking around at it. Some nice textures, nothing too bright or too dark.   Posted: 06/22/2020 13:14:59

The image is so retail and sharp. Nice shot. For my eye, the picture looks too busy and full, less is better.   Posted: 06/25/2020 17:16:54
