Sunrise Over Ice by Matt Moses

March 2020 - Sunrise Over Ice

About the Image(s)

Another Lake Superior sunrise...The sun's above the horizon and starts to light up the frozen shoreline. I was out for the early morning Milky Way night photos and shot this one for the ice detail since it was a clear sky without much color that morning.

ISO 64
2 stop ND graduated filter

Editing: (Capture One)
adjusted exposure, contrast, brightness, and shadow detail
applied sharpening
adjust white balance

I can say, for me, you take some of the coldest pictures. This one makes me shiver. Technically it is very strong. Depth of field and focus is spot on. The "rising sun" sets the tone as a strong warmth reference. The emotional response is exactly what photography, in my opinion, is all about. I think the low angle of the shot is perfect. I salute your perseverance in the face of a very uncomfortable situation. Very nice. P.S. Hope you're feeling better.   Posted: 03/16/2020 18:31:01

Thanks Kurtis, was relatively warm this day only like 15F. :) Glad you appreciate the angle. Was still mixed if I didn't give enough room about the sun but I think it works.   Posted: 03/21/2020 11:12:34

The sharp details of the blue ice are set off beautifully by the black rocks that point the eyes to the colorful sunrise above.

As someone originally from Chicago off Lake Michigan, but now enjoying sunny S FL, I admire your fortitude and persistence in photographing winter at Lake Superior!

Stay safe and well!   Posted: 03/19/2020 12:41:01

It's very nice shot. I like the color tone of image. The sun light reflecting on ice make the image much living.   Posted: 03/21/2020 12:02:55

The blue ice and orange sun complement each other nicely with color and temperature. The reflections of the sun in the ice are beautiful. The patterns of the snow on the ice are a good abstraction. Well done!

When does spring arrive in Duluth? We will miss the ice cold pictures!   Posted: 03/23/2020 14:03:07
