January 2020 - Canal Sunrise

About the Image(s)

A long exposure sunrise in Duluth's Canal Park. I was out just hoping for some good clouds at sunrise so experimented with lots of long exposures and ND filters etc.

Increased contrast
Increased shadows
Lowered whites/highlights
converted to camera and lens profile

ISO 31 (Low -1)

I love the color and atmosphere created by the horizon and the separation of color. To me the image tells of a stark and lonely place isolated from the land. I think the foreground rocks add balance and help lead my eyes to the lighthouse. I really like that the long exposure of just 4 secs. didn't take all the texture out of the water. In my opinion you make really nice land/seascapes. I think you could improve the balance of this image by removing enough of the empty sky to put the horizon nearer to the 1/3 line. Would love to see this printed on glass or metal. Very nice.   Posted: 01/07/2020 22:01:20

Yes, I debated taking more sky out but I didn't like the whiter light being so high.

Just a case where this photo may not work.   Posted: 01/22/2020 10:57:40

Very nicely captured sunrise! The color is perfect and the very bright area over the lighthouse emphasizes it. The rocks have interesting reflections and provide a nice balance. I would suggest a slight bit more room for the rocks in the lower right corner.

How did you get an ISO of 31? Just curious.   Posted: 01/21/2020 07:46:16

ISO of 31 was possible by the Low iso setting options of the D850. Essentially you can lower the ISO below the base 64 in .3, .7, and 1.0 steps lower.   Posted: 01/22/2020 10:54:14

Agreed I do need more space for the lower right, I'll have to recheck the crop.   Posted: 01/22/2020 10:58:02
