Last Sunrise by Matt Moses

January 2018 - Last Sunrise

About the Image(s)

This was the last sunrise of 2017. Air temperature in Duluth was about -24F with -40F wind chills. Due to the warm water versus the cold air you get the fog effect local call sea smoke forming a misty scene and low level clouds. I was down near the water where the waves were causing new ice to form on the rocks.

Tech:
1/6 sec @ F/5.6
ISO 64
30mm

Editing:
Did a bunch of work in post in Lightroom. Increased contrast and shadows while dropping the highlights and whites. Corrected the white balance and minimal vibrance and saturation.

I look at this and feel the COLD! Beautifully done sunrise in the "sea smoke," nicely corrected for white balance and avoiding excessive brightness. The lit lighthouse to the left balances the sunrise on the right and the framing takes my eye across the water, past the lighthouse to the sunrise. Ice crystals on rocks in the foreground add to the overall effect.

As a native of Chicago, now living in S FL for over 30 years, I have to chuckle at the reference to "warm water." During winter here, you can identify the tourists because they are in the water at the beach, while we spoiled residents wait for water temp between 70 and 75 degrees! :)

a suggestion. next time you can try applying an ND filter to get a longer exposure time. If you have a RND you can also try it together with the ND. Do remember to do this on tripod.   Posted: 01/20/2018 09:48:47

Nicely balanced with the lighthouse and clouds on one side and the shore on the other. The blue tint adds to the cold. I can see a green light beyond the red indicating a channel that must be tough in the winter. The scene is very nicely framed.   Posted: 01/22/2018 15:37:17

A real good image. The ripples in the water show a sense of movement, and leads my eye through the fog to the lighthouse in the background. The rising sun on the right brings it all together. Should do well in competition.   Posted: 01/23/2018 20:30:11

Excellent image. The blue hue in the foreground provides the feeling of the subzero temps. The fog and lighthouse provides a sense of mystery. Excellent sharpness and composition. I like how the foreground rocks add to the dimension of the image. I agree with a comment above, this image should do well in competition!   Posted: 01/26/2018 12:06:03
