Mt Rainier at Christmas by Dan DeVries

About the Image(s)

Canon R5, ISO 500, f16, 96mm, 5 Seconds. On a tripod.

This was taken from a church parking lot at sunset. There was a full moon out highlighting Mt Rainier.

This is a composite of 6 photos. 3 photos (different time exposures) focused on the foreground combined in Photomatics for an HDR of the lights and trees. 3 photos focused on the mountain combined in Photomatics for an HDR of the sky and mountain.

The two HDRs were brought into Affinity Photo for combining, and removal of the numerous power lines.

Final adjustments in Capture One.

I tried to make it not look too fake - but it looks “photoshopped” to me. Any suggestions?

This is a nice concept to show foreground and background, each illuminated with entirely different types of light.
I had a look at your original and because of all the busy extra stuff in it, it looks more realistic than your finished image, and the original does not announce "too photoshopped" at all. How about inserting the railing of a deck into your finished image to suggest that this is the view of Mt. Rainier from someone's back deck?   Posted: 01/07/2021 12:22:11

I'm jealous of the chance to see the mountain in the moonlight. That portion of the image is lovely, well focused and properly exposed. The lighted elements are for me superfluous.   Posted: 01/07/2021 16:26:09

The mountain for me is the best bit. The Christmas lights are nice but I'd love to see one just of the mountain   Posted: 01/09/2021 11:31:02

I'm so sorry, but this composition just does not work for me. The Christmas lighted trees are cool and the mountain is great, but they're just not working together as a composite. My suggestion is to focus on the mountain or the trees, and I'm a sucker for that mountain, so here's my rendition without the trees:   Posted: 01/13/2021 16:12:50

I agree that the mountain is the star of the image. The composite is interesting and a nice Christmas shot, though the bright lights are somewhat distracting.   Posted: 01/13/2021 17:08:45

Composition look dreamy . Part of tree overlap the mountain distracting for me.   Posted: 01/17/2021 00:38:13

The mountain along is special at night. Agree that it is the focal point. Fun to try some creative holiday approach, but the artificiality detracts from the gorgeous snow capped mountain.   Posted: 01/17/2021 01:14:56

Thanks everyone. I started out to photograph the holiday lights at a local church - for a "holiday card." I couldn't get much that I liked of just the lights - so I thought the juxtaposition would work.   Posted: 01/17/2021 11:00:11

You might consider trying a final color wash or texture to balance the warmth of the lights with the coolness of the mountain.   Posted: 01/17/2021 11:26:09

Thanks. I think cooling the foreground and lights might help.   Posted: 01/17/2021 11:59:22
