About the Image(s)

Here is an image I took with my LENSBABY velvet 56 lens… Of an interrupted fern . . . Depending on how open the lens is, the effect gets more and more artistic/blurry.

Macro is really hard to do with this lens, but I think I’m gaining on it.

I’ve had a dickens of a time figuring out how to balance the aperture and focal length to get things in focus with the appropriate exposure.

If I don’t fall on the subject, we sometimes get some fun shots.

Nice image. It would be nice to darken the background, but with all the intricate detail, I don't think I can mask it.
Tom - Does Photoshop have a "focus mask" feature?   Posted: 06/03/2020 16:37:19

There is a Select Subject function that works pretty good 50-60% of the time. I still choose to use something like Topaz ReMask to do my mask work. It works the best for me.   Posted: 06/11/2020 00:08:44

Agree with Dan completely. Beyond my photoshop skills to do it justice   Posted: 06/10/2020 08:04:51

Arabella, Good for you to stretch. Macro is out of my league. However, I find a clump of green midway on the left to be distracting. I played a little with it. Sadly it wouldn't transfer. Tom, Can you help?   Posted: 06/12/2020 01:11:22

It's possible that your editing added to the file size, putting it over the 1Mb limit, or it was in a format that won't display properly.

Please check those things and try again.   Posted: 06/12/2020 13:34:32

I think this image has a lot going for it, though the current background is distracting. That probably has to do with the way the LensBaby lens shifts the focus. I've not worked with one before and likely won't anytime soon. This old dog has a harder time with new tricks these days. d;¬{D

Taking this into Affinity Photo, I had a go with applying an Average Blur to the background, then darkening it. Then I used curves to add some contrast to the fern. Thoughts?   Posted: 06/12/2020 13:42:16

It's made by a company called Serif, and they have a version for Mac, Windows or iPad. It's the closest thing to Photoshop and there's no subscription. They're currently selling their software for half-off, so it's $25 for software that's almost as good as Photoshop (and in some ways better).

Cool shot! I try macro on occasion--it's hard enough getting the preferred part in focus, I can't imagine trying it with a Lens Baby. Good for you! I really like Tom's changes. I've heard of Affinity before but now I'll definitely look into it. Thanks, Tom!   Posted: 06/12/2020 16:10:06
