About the Image(s)

Used my Canon D70 and my 18-400 Tamron lens. f9 1/400 second

Not happy with the background with all those confusing elements. Should have used a smaller f stop. Applied a neutral density filter in lightroom and tried to blur out the background with snapseed.

Nice capture. It's hard to separate out the background on these type of photos. (Similar to my rodeo shots.)

You could try panning which would help blur the background. You would have to slow your shutter speed - maybe to 200th or 150th of a second. (need to play with it) You would also need to be at more of a right angle. Some lenses have a "pan" setting (#2) for image stabilization.

You could also blur and darken the background using LR and/or PS. You might have been able to shoot this at a lower f-stop (f5.6 or lower?) which might have helped. I think it would have been OK to have one of the horses sharp - and the others a bit off.

I never remember any of this when I'm in the middle of the action.   Posted: 10/10/2019 12:36:56

You really captured the action well! Your image has a lot of action despite the motion being frozen. And the intensity of the driver's faces adds even more to the story.

My suggestion is to darken the background a lot, especially the tower and remove the distraction of the the pole on the right:   Posted: 10/14/2019 16:38:42

A cool action shot! Though as you said, the background was distracting. Tom's darkening did the trick. You may think you're going too far in darkening when working on an image. But the viewer, especially a casual viewer, doesn't look at that. They just focus on what you want them to see.   Posted: 10/19/2019 08:13:45
