Hay Bales in Snow by Brenda Frezeman

January 2018 - Hay Bales in Snow

About the Image(s)

While in Pennsylvania for the holidays, we got a few inches of snow. The temperatures were so cold that it stuck around for a while. One day, when driving around in farm country, I spotted some snow-covered hay bales. They're one of my favorite subjects, as you may recall from a few months ago. But I had never seen any in winter before. They're usually brought in from the fields and stacked long before the first snowfall. I don't think these will be going anywhere for a while.

I can almost feel the cold of a frigid day in winter. Nice composition with the placement of 7 hay bales. I find the electrical wires distracting.   Posted: 01/18/2018 17:53:22

Yes, I agree on the wires. I didn't know how tough it would be to remove them, but I gave it a try and it wasn't too bad. Thanks.   Posted: 01/19/2018 08:14:03

Very nice shot. I tried a few things. Cropped some of the sky out and darkened the sky. I added some contrast and pulled out the wires in PS. (didn't do a great job.)   Posted: 01/18/2018 18:59:30

Yes. Cropping out some of the sky and darkening what remains helps to keep the eyes focused on the hay bales. That finished Brenda's lovely capture very well.   Posted: 01/21/2018 12:21:08

I like the image. Not being used to snow, I didn't at first realise that it was snow until I read the title. I thought it was sunlight on top of the bales. I like Dan's version with less sky.   Posted: 01/19/2018 18:24:48

Living in the midwest for over 25 years now, I can attest to it being unusual to have hay bales still out in the fields during the first (or any) snow. This image thus captures a unique experience and does it well. As I said in reply to Dan, his crop and darkening of the remaining sky finishes off the composition.   Posted: 01/21/2018 12:24:53
