Portrait of a Goose by John Roach

March 2020 - Portrait of a Goose

About the Image(s)

This image was captured at a local lake. A half dozen of these geese have been hanging around since Late October 2019. This one was captured in early December as I attempted to get up close and still not be attacked. They are aggressive. The teeth on these geese look formidable. Captured with Fuji X-H1 with 18-135mm lens at 85 mm equivalent. This the RAW image processed in Lightroom after being captured at ISO 400, 1/340s, f/9, -0.7 EV, Aperture Priority. I cropped and did selective edits to present.

This is a good with attitude. I love it. Makes me smile. I like that the head cleared the color separation which I think ands some dynamism to the picture as a whole.   Posted: 03/09/2020 12:50:33

The goose's teeth drew me into the image, then I went to its eyes. There is good drama here. Your colors are natural, and the crop is a good one. If I have any suggestion it is to barely darken the grass behind the goose. In my opinion it is only a bit too light.   Posted: 03/12/2020 17:17:41

My eye went right to those teeth also. I think he had his eye on you with a bit of a warning to back off. Very nice detail in this portrait.   Posted: 03/13/2020 14:37:54

The look in this goose's eye and his general attitude tell me to run. (I have always been a little bit afraid of geese!) But this is the first time I ever thought about their teeth - did not even think they had any. I think darkening the grassy area around the head would separate him from the background an dbring even more focus to that look he is giving us.   Posted: 03/14/2020 10:33:01

Wonderful detail in the head. I particularly love seeing the tomium and the repeating orange in the beak and eye. His expression is grand, and reflects an attitude of "don't even think about coming any closer".   Posted: 03/18/2020 13:46:45
