Mt Rainier Winter by Pamela Hoaglund

February 2021 - Mt Rainier Winter

About the Image(s)

I had been waiting for a fresh snow fall on Mt Rainier so I could photograph the snow laden trees. The mountain was hidden in snow clouds this day but it was great light for landscapes. This was taken from Glacier Bridge and is looking down the Nisqually River valley. The river comes off the Nisqually Glacier on Mt Rainier and flows all the way to Puget Sound. I did very minimal editing Snapseed. Taken with my iPhone 12 mini.

Looks foreboding and forbidding. Glad I'm in my warm office. Did you play with the black point setting? I wonder if there could be a more dramatic look?   Posted: 02/02/2021 17:14:47

Where in Snapseed can you set the black and white point?   Posted: 02/03/2021 14:43:50

Pamela, when I want a close look at this I usually go to the Curves settings in Lightroom (mobile). Other than that I think Structure in Snapseed does some of the same thing. Here's my quick take on your image from Lightroom. If I was to do it again I'd lighten the Whites as well.   Posted: 02/04/2021 08:30:28

1. Snapseed does not have a black point, but you could take Ambiance and move it to the left and see if you like the effect. Going left brightens the highlights and darkens the shadows and going right darkens the highlights and lightens the shadows.
2. Yes you do have Blackpoint. If you are keeping you iOS up to date which is now 14.4, you have a great Blackpoint slider. While the image in open click on EDIT on the upper right hand corner. You now have a series of tools that in 14.4 are outstanding. In fact the first slider is Auto. It is wonderful. I would not use three of the tools. a. Exposure, b Contrast and c. Saturation. These would be better used in Snapseed.   Posted: 02/04/2021 10:10:45

Ok. So you are saying adjust the black point in the photo editor on the phone. I will check that out. Thanks.   Posted: 02/04/2021 10:51:13

If this were in B&W it would look like an Ansel Adams photo from the Tetons. I love the lines. The slight blue hue (on my monitor anyway) is real, but could be eliminated and that might increase the drama.   Posted: 02/03/2021 10:48:29

The winding river makes for a very nice photo. Good job!   Posted: 02/05/2021 17:38:43

My first reaction is, "Burrrr". Cold snowy winter scene. It's another of your good calendar shots. As others have mentioned, it might be possible to warm the image a little to reduce the bluish tint. That might be easier in Photoshop than it would be with apps, but I'm not skilled at either. Nice shot.

Breathtakingly gorgeous scene and magnificently captured with your new phone. Great composition bringing all elements together.   Posted: 02/15/2021 12:22:03
