Sunset Over Sandy Hook Bay by Lynne Royce

September 2020 - Sunset Over Sandy Hook Bay

About the Image(s)

We went for a walk one evening this week along the bay at Sandy Hook National Seashore Park when I noticed about a dozen photographers gathered to shoot the setting sun. I shot 250 photos in half an hour which allowed me to refine my composition but was a nightmare trying to find the best. Wanted to include the young man lower left and get old pier leading line to setting sun. The minute the sun set the adjacent Coast Guard Station played taps which was a perfect ending to a fun photoshoot. Most people, like me, shooting with camera phone. Processed photograph in Snapseed.

We all do sunsets and worry that they have become trite. This one certainly is not. The great sky dominates and it takes a little time to find the person in the lower left. That and the framing with the pier and breakwater(?) point to opposite corners of the image and create a mental diagonal. A very interesting approach.   Posted: 09/03/2020 15:35:09

This image is "breath taking" so to speak. You caught the sun at just the right time and clouds were nice and seem to be moving. The rough water and the water beyond the old wooden shafts sticking out of the water add another definition. Yes the man setting gives that added touch to the composition. This is a great image to have a print made and frame. Go for it!   Posted: 09/03/2020 18:09:30

How do you resize a camera phone image to print? Is there an app that does that? Hopefully there is a similar one for an Android.   Posted: 09/13/2020 18:43:57

I'm interested in a good resizing app, too. I currently use "Resize It" to reduce image size for this group, and my images lose quality and sharpness. I can put the resized image into Snapseed to try to bring back those things, but it isn't as good.   Posted: 09/13/2020 19:37:36

Great photo. I have seen so many sunset images where the sun is nothing but a big white area in the scene. I agree with the timing, perfect. The reflection works well. The shadows closer to the foreground add strong depth. Yes, a definitely wall hanger........if you have any place to hang it!   Posted: 09/04/2020 17:25:59

Great sky, great water, great piers, and great colors. I have to admit that I didn't notice the human until I read your description. You captured the moment well.

I don't think I would have seen the man in the lower left either without reading your description. My eye is riveted to that amazing sky with the orange of the sitting sun reflecting off those amazing clouds and water. I think the pilings really add to the balance of the image. You have a nice foreground, middle ground and background. A keeper for sure.   Posted: 09/09/2020 22:35:35

I love it. All the ingredients are there for a great scenic. At the risk of being picky, is the horizon tilting to the right?   Posted: 09/13/2020 15:31:55

Thanks for comments everyone. Think tilting horizons may be my outlook on life especially during pandemic.   Posted: 09/13/2020 18:46:00
