Women's Lifeguard Competition by Lynne Royce

August 2019 - Women's Lifeguard Competition

About the Image(s)

We chanced upon this competition at Sandy Hook National Seashore Park yesterday. I grabbed my Samsung Galaxy Note 8 camera phone to stand shoulder to shoulder with photographers shooting with DSLR and long lens and snapped away. This is a scene from the final part of competition for women lifeguards from all over country that includes : Running half a mile and leaping into ocean and then swimming as fast as can for a mile, then picking up life saving board and propelling board back out along marked route . This photo shows end of contest where drop boards and race to finish line as teammates grab boards and cheer them on. Edited with HDR, tiny bit of curves, teeny saturation and some detail in Snapseed.

Lots of action, colors and you caught it all.

Is that little spot in the left part of the sky a bird, helicopter or something?

You framing of the action make for good composition for me.   Posted: 08/02/2019 10:59:09

Yup That's a helicopter hovering over the action.   Posted: 08/11/2019 13:30:41

What a great opportunity to see these young women in this tough competition. Nice colors and action. I had to chuckle at your comment: "tiny bit of curves". I'd have to agree.   Posted: 08/03/2019 17:36:33

Way to hang in there with the DSLR photographers. The bright orange and blue colors compliment each other nicely and really catch the eye. Good choice of more of a landscape dimension. One minor suggest would be to add a bit more space for the swimmers on the right. Overall nicely done.   Posted: 08/04/2019 20:11:25

Totally agree about adding space on right but not have technical skills to accomplish in phone apps.   Posted: 08/11/2019 13:34:07

You sure did get a feeling of action. It must have been great fun to watch. The orange colors against the blue is dramatic.   Posted: 08/10/2019 14:51:39

Like all the others, I find the colors compelling and the action is very well conveyed. The bright sunshine that toasted us all at beaches last week is obvious in this image and adds to the drama. I was at Cape May all this week and saw nothing that came close to your image.

Great action shot. Who wouldn't want one of those gals to save you from drowning 😉. Love all the colors. Getting more of the woman on the right in the image would have been awesome but I can imagine how fast the action was. Right place at the right time!   Posted: 08/13/2019 18:15:09
