Stairs to Where? by Pamela Hoaglund

July 2017 - Stairs to Where?

About the Image(s)

Stairs to where?
This image was taken at what used to be the Montana Children's Orphanage. Opened in 1894 and closed in 1975. The Travel Channel "Ghost Adventure Crew" has filmed here. I would love to see the episode. The current owner says she has heard children singing in some of the rooms. I shot this image looking through the broken out window of a door looking up the stairway. The image was taken using VividHDR in dramatic mode. I did a little tweaking in Snapseed. This was on my "Ghost towns of Montana" trip in June. I fell in love with stairways in many of the old buildings. You may see some more in the coming months.

Even though the building is abandoned, you can see the wonderful craftsmanship of the builders. So glad you were able to get this shot. I am looking forward to more images of your Ghost Town visits. Jerry   Posted: 07/03/2017 13:02:23

Oh, I can see a wonderful, creative, "Ghosty" type image coming on here! Fabulous backdrop!   Posted: 07/06/2017 22:32:22

Excellent composition and use of lighting. Keeping the open door to the outside is reassuring there is an exit if that ghost appears😀   Posted: 07/08/2017 20:05:34

I don't know if this could be done with an iPhone and slow shutter app, but a woman walking down the stairs in a white gown, blurred by her movement while the shutter was open would make a really ghostly image. I could do it with a DSLR, but I haven't tried anything like that with a mobile device. Another reason for a tripod mount! Nice scene.   Posted: 07/09/2017 16:37:02

We did it with the DSLR but I didn't try with the iPhone.   Posted: 07/10/2017 13:34:11

I'm intrigued with the mirror being in such fine condition and the stairs so run down. Makes an interesting contrast. The zigzag line of the stairs takes you right on up.Have you tried flipping the image? Stairs coming up the other way with the rail post right at you on the left might work well.   Posted: 07/10/2017 21:33:10

It's not a mirror but the frame of a broken out window in a door.   Posted: 07/10/2017 21:55:34

Wow this photograph has everything. Great lines from window frame, stairs, walls and hand rail. Texture from chipping paint. It's a creepy setting and that open door at bottom of stairs adds a story telling element. Was someone scared and ran out of this creepy house as quickly as possible because saw or heard ghost? Looking forward to seeing more of your stairway photographs.   Posted: 07/19/2017 06:54:41
