Gorilla by Cindy Lynch

November 2020 - Gorilla

About the Image(s)

This was taken inside and through glass at the St. Louis Zoo. I find it is very difficult to get the eyes bright enough in gorillas and was able to do so in this one and I liked his steady stare at me. I used a mask texture layer to simplify the background. Settings:f/4.5, 1/100 sec., ISO 1250 and 150mm.

What an interesting picture. You have excellent detail in the face, I particularly like the eyes and mouth. The expression is amazing and he looks nearly human. What spoils it for me is there appears to be a halo around the head. Get this out and for me you have a winner.   Posted: 11/06/2020 11:29:27

Cindy, have you tried using the new Refine Hair tool in Photoshop to cut out the gorilla. If you have not seen it there is a good link here:

Love the look with his eyes staring right through you. Well captured. It does appear you tried to put a mask around the subject. I would rather see a simple vignette. We want to count the hairs around his head.   Posted: 11/07/2020 14:14:08

Great shot. I need to follow David's tip. The one place I've seen Gorillas without glass barrier is the Brookfield Zoo (Chicago) monkey house but it might need a longer lens and or cropped frame camera. The eyes get you.   Posted: 11/09/2020 12:16:01
