About the Image(s)

Used usual tools but using the graduated filter and from the top and bottom got me the clouds and bridge grating effects I was trying for. Comments on other techniques welcome.

It's all about leading lines and a great sky! This subject and composition are great. The monochrome version adds more drama and contrast to the sky. My suggestion is to brighten the middle a little to really bring the viewer's eye to the focal point. I used the radial filter in Camera Raw to lighten the center just a little. I also love the colors and textures on the walkway in the color version.   Posted: 07/09/2020 10:30:02

I too prefer the mono version for the reasons Cindy gives. I also like your composition. Cindy's version which lightens up the centre, for me, goes a little too far. I would reduce her lightening by about 50%. I would also clone out the lighthouse on the right hand side. I think you have a good balance between the sky and the sea/jetty.   Posted: 07/12/2020 07:34:53

Karl, an interesting capture. Cindy nailed it and David gave me an idea. Composition could be improved by stepping to the left rail, thereby, putting the oil rig in exact center of the walkway far end. It's just an afterthought. I took it to Luminar 4 with the following result. It is too radical?   Posted: 07/12/2020 16:30:22

Karl, I much prefer the monochrome version, however if you were to bring out more texture and detail in the colour image, it might be just as dramatic. You have captured such compelling leading lines in the railings, on the pier deck (even the clouds appear to lead our eyes towards the rig) and in my view, the oil rig being slightly off centre at the end of the pier creates more interest (but then I am kind of into asymmetry). I like the effect Cindy has achieved by lightening the centre, but I might pull the brightness back a bit or, if possible, feather the edges of the radial filter more.   Posted: 07/18/2020 22:11:37

Thanks all. Great ideas to play with. By the way its the main lighthouse at the Port Washington Harbor. Wish I could get the red light flashing (oh, that's what LR and PS is for). Also I'm trying to capture this during a storm like another local guy has (google Jeffery Ewig photos on one of the fine art websites).

I also prefer the mono version. You have done great things to the clouds and the brown colors in the walkway distract me.   Posted: 07/24/2020 16:22:50

Nice shot, I like the mono but would have liked the lighthouse to be center in the walkway. You might want to clone out the beacon on the right side as well, you could add a beam coming out of the lens to make it interesting. I moved the lighthouse and added beams from behind the lighthouse. Interesting. Great clouds.   Posted: 07/29/2020 20:36:01
