About the Image(s)

Whitby, UK

I like the colour in the original of this image but converting it to BW, I thought, enhances the historic look of this lovely North Yorkshire city. 1/1600 sec at f/7.1 ISO 2000. 16 mm focal length. converted to monochrome in Lightroom.

What a wonderful sky! For my taste, while the monochrome version is nice, but I prefer the color version. For your monochrome image, I think you could increase the contrast to give it more dimension and "pop". I am a little torn if I want to focus on the sky or the buildings. My eye keeps jumping back and forth. Maybe you could try cropping a little off the top of the clouds, making it even more of a panorama.   Posted: 07/06/2020 11:48:09

Thanks, Cindy. I think, when I originally took this image (in colour), the sky is what drew me. But I am ok with less of it.   Posted: 07/18/2020 18:46:01

Each year Whitby holds two Goth festivals in October and April and is a place where I have taken many "people" pictures.

I like both the colour and mono versions. I would definitely crop some of the sky as it does compete with the abbey. You could also consider cropping from the left so the abbey is not in the centre of the image. I would also add more contrast.   Posted: 07/10/2020 11:40:18

Thanks, David. Loved East Yorkshire - the seaside...Whitby, Scarborough, Filey Bay, Fambourough Head...and walking on the moors, village pubs, etc.
Yes, I like your crop (although I think you meant from the right?) and the increased contrast.   Posted: 07/18/2020 19:01:03

Color is OK and Monochrome is better in my view. David nailed it with the crop and increased contrast and composition change. The clouds are dramatic and your subject of the image is the abby. Cannot explain why I am in to vignetting, maybe it is because I recently bought into Luminar 4 software. It makes is so easy to create a vignettte which focuses a little more on the abby.   Posted: 07/12/2020 16:06:06

Thanks, Karl, for adding the vignetting to David's and Cindy's suggestions. I am also a fan of (subtle) vignettes - in this case, I think it brings out the light in the centre. I sometimes use Nik (in Color Efex) "darken/lighten centre" to achieve this effect.   Posted: 07/18/2020 19:06:27

Excellent mono picture. Love the clouds and the building stands out well for me.   Posted: 07/24/2020 16:18:15

Think you meant Chuck. I think Cindy, David and Chuck had excellent suggestions.   Posted: 07/26/2020 16:13:50

I agree with all of the suggestions for the monochrome version. I do prefer the color version, it makes the building stand out more.   Posted: 07/29/2020 20:24:47
