Old School Gym by Cindy Lynch

August 2019 - Old School Gym

About the Image(s)

I was fortunate enough to tour a high school that had been closed for several years and vandalized. There was a basketball in this dilapidated gym and I placed it in the light from the window. I first opened the image in Camera Raw and adjust the clarity and contrast. I used a curves layer in Photoshop to accentuate the light streaming in the window. Settings: f/11, 1/100 sec., ISO 180, 18 mm focl length with a tripod.

Good eye to find that basketball. In my mind it is perfectly placed for composition. The tonality, contrast and sharpness are spot on. You certainly held the shadow detail well. For help, I would suggest dodging the backboard, if possible.   Posted: 08/10/2019 17:33:39

I dodged the backboard as you suggested and it makes a big difference. Thanks!   Posted: 08/14/2019 10:11:18

I think the dodging improves it, too. Nice shot. Love the basketball placement, too.   Posted: 08/19/2019 20:13:11

An interesting image which I could imagine me taking. I like the graffiti round the gym and the basket ball which I assume you have placed in the perfect position. As I cannot help myself playing around with images and so I took it into Topaz Adjust and used the Heavy pop grunge filter.   Posted: 08/20/2019 12:47:36

After uploading it I thought it was a little flat so I have added contrast.   Posted: 08/20/2019 12:51:04

Thanks, David. I wonder if that introduces too much noise?

Congratulations on your 1st Place in Star Mono and Second Place in Star Color in the June Print of the Month competition.   Posted: 08/20/2019 22:05:28

A fascinating image, a lot to look at. I agree about the dodging of the backboard, but might I also suggest cropping out some of the top, it is somewhat interesting, but I think it makes it stronger with the top third cut out.   Posted: 08/26/2019 21:48:41

Cropping suggestion has some merit but just to edit out the small ceiling upper right hand corner and cropping to three windows. Just some thoughts as really like your original.   Posted: 08/31/2019 13:42:12
