September 2020 - Wabi Sabi – Beauty Among Imperfection

About the Image(s)

My wife and I so thoroughly enjoyed the webinar that Lisa Cuchara presented to PSA a while back that we recommended to our camera club that she present a program to us. It was exceptionally well received and had tremendous impact on even our most experienced photographers. It has caused us to take another look at our photography and the beauty of subjects that may be past their prime.

Technical Details: Nikon D810 and Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 lens, 1/8 sec @ f/16, ISO 125, focus stack of 16 images processed with Helicon Focus.

Wabi sabi... From my perspective, this image is composed well, the colors and exposure are great. I just wonder if the image could be even stronger if the stems were cropped off...maybe a 5x7 or 8x10 crop?   Posted: 09/20/2020 06:43:01

Do you mean like this? I think I prefer the original. The cropped version seems like it is "missing" something, like the blossoms are rising out of nowhere, they aren't anchored down. Appreciate your comments again :-) Or do you mean to crop in even farther?   Posted: 09/21/2020 10:54:03

I like this image. As Fred says nice colors, great exposure. I prefer the original crop and I like that the focus stacking has provided a really sharp image of the whole flower. I'm inspired to try the stacking method myself. I have the same lens and a camera that can make the stack but I need the software and some practice! Nicely done Alan.   Posted: 09/21/2020 21:39:23
