Surfing Off Hermosa Beach, CA by Graham Fisher

March 2020 - Surfing Off Hermosa Beach, CA

About the Image(s)

I took this from the pier during a visit to Hermosa Beach, CA in February of 2019. Some slight slight enhancements in Lightroom (exposure +0.95, highlights -71, whites +33) and only slight cropping on the left to move the surfer off center. Generally, I tend to shoot with a wider field of view and take advantage of the D850’s 46Mpixels and crop to taste. This a rare occasion where it was pretty tight as shot and I felt it would be nice to have more context with a slightly wider field. I like the way the water sprays on one side but not the other and the intense look on the surfer’s face. However, does anyone in the group think this is good enough for competition or is it just another snapshot? Should there be more room around the subject?

Nikon D850, 1/1000s, f11, ISO200, Nikkor 28-300mm at 300mm handheld.

Great action photo. I think it is absolutely good for competition. This type of image usually does quite well in our club. The only thing you might consider is brightening his face just a bit which I have done with a non destructive layer mask   Posted: 03/15/2020 13:50:39

Great action photo! Definitely would be a contender in a photojournalism category.   Posted: 03/16/2020 14:45:51

Composition, exposure, colors and cropping is very good to me. The person is sharp yet the water shows movement and action. I find this to be a great shot.   Posted: 03/16/2020 19:40:53

Alan and Fred, thank you too for the encouraging comments. I'll submit for competition when a suitable category comes up and let you know if it ranks anywhere.   Posted: 03/23/2020 00:20:59
