Sunflowers by Tom Brott

September 2019 - Sunflowers

About the Image(s)

Every year in the first two weeks of October there are several places that bloom with a sea of these Southern Sunflowers. This image was taken last year and I am looking forward to another good season of blooms this year. The blooms last only about 2 weeks so there is a very short window to shoot in.

Canon 7D MII, f/13, 1/1250 sec., ISO 800, 24 to 70 lens at 55mm, hand held.

A little color correction was done and some cropping.

The contrast between the yellow flowers and the blue sky immediately captures the eye, but what I really like about this image is the perspective of looking up at the flowers. There are many points of interest in this image, maybe too many. It is hard for the eye to settle on just one subject. What if you cropped to just the two flowers on the right, perhaps as a vertical image?   Posted: 09/11/2019 09:21:38

I think my goal was to show the vast fields of yellow with the flowers and showing the different heights that they grew in. I had during this outing also photographed many individual flowers.   Posted: 09/18/2019 12:31:41

The image is sharp and in good light. Nice bokeh showing portraying vastness. It gives me the feeling of flowers freely moving in the air. The image projects exactly what a field of these flowers are... scattered and seemingly disorganized but I am sure they have an organization that us humans are unaware of.   Posted: 09/28/2019 18:57:43

I really like the colors in this image. It conveys a feeling of summertime and joy. I see what Alan is saying about a subject. I think the culprit in this image is the one bud that is dead center and framed by the diamond formed by crisscrossing stems. It is also one of the brighter buds in the image. My eye keeps being drawn there. With out the placement of this bud, I think that I would see it more the way Fred describes.   Posted: 09/30/2019 09:22:07

Amazing mood! I love the game of yellow and blue colors. I think the photo is a bit "crowded" but this is the untouched nature.   Posted: 09/30/2019 11:39:21

I like the sharpness of the flowers in the front reaching up to the sky. I feel the flowers in the background, although blurred are distracting.   Posted: 09/30/2019 21:35:52
