Willet by Tom Brott

August 2019 - Willet

About the Image(s)

It was early morning on the beach and this young willet was searching the waters edge for food. I tried to time it correctly to get a rolling wave as background and a good shot with it’s eye facing me.

Canon 7D mark II, f/9, 1/2500sec, ISO 800, 100-400 zoom with 1.4 ext = 560 mm, hand held.

Adjusted several sliders and cropped.

Well chosen f-stop, the subject stands out well from the background, but still provides environment. The only thing that I find distracting is the out of focus highlight just left and above the bird's bill.   Posted: 08/25/2019 14:16:24

Nice job! You got a great catch light in the eye and you have a good composition which allows you to see both the detail in the bird as well as giving the viewer context to the environment. I like the texture of the shells in the sand as well as the colors in the blurred background. Like Al, I was going to mention the one highlight near the bird that pulled my eye. Overall, nicely done.   Posted: 08/27/2019 10:59:21

I find your image to have a very nice bokeh, with a sharp image of the bird and balanced colors. The globe near the beak in the center is distracting and I believe removing it would make a good image that much better. The other globes are not as troubling to me I suspect because they are not in the center, are away from the subject and not as bright.   Posted: 08/28/2019 17:07:35
