Sunset From Palazzo Vecchio by Alan Kiecker

August 2019 - Sunset From Palazzo Vecchio

About the Image(s)

Palazzo Vecchio provides a wonderful view overlooking Florence, Italy. To retain the color in the sky and the reflection in the Arno River and still capture detail of the buildings, this image is an HDR composite of three images each separated by three stops. Basic exposure was f/5.6, ISO 250 with individual exposures of 1/30sec, 1/250 sec, and 1/2000 sec.

Wonderful image and cityscape. Beautiful view and colors in the city and the sky. I realize this is a composite image but I have an general area of the image that bothers me. In the center left it looks like two hilly or mountain areas that are light and separated by a darker V shape. If you follow that line around the image to the right that lighter area appears to follow the foot hills around the image. I don't know how to handle this. I tried to use the dehaze slider and the clarity slider a little and I think it helped a little. I don't know maybe it was fog starting but it caught my eye looking unnatural.   Posted: 08/19/2019 20:55:10

Thanks for pointing this out. I never would have noticed this. After playing around with this image, it seems this to be an artifact of NIK HDR. I have redone the image using HDR merging in Lightroom. I no longer see this. I have also adjusted the white balance and enhanced the color in the river. Your comments appreciated.   Posted: 08/27/2019 16:14:51

When I first looked at the image, I didn't notice the area that Tom pointed out. But once I saw what he was talking about, it pulls my eye every time. I am curious if it was a natural phenomenon or if it was a result of the editing. Overall, I love the image. The sky is a wonderful color with the right amount of clouds. The buildings are interesting and you maintained their detail well. My favorite part is the reflection of the sky on the river.   Posted: 08/27/2019 11:03:41

I love the colors of the sky, the color of the misty hills in the background and orange reflection off the river. I also noticed what Tom pointed out and your image from LR removes this. However, I like the background hills in the center and right much better with the first image. I find the foreground distracts from the river and hills which I believe are the main subjects. Maybe cropping the foreground and left side plume out on the first image would make a stronger image?   Posted: 08/28/2019 17:16:17

Lovely cityscape, nice colors, the mood comes through. I think the correction was good for the photo.   Posted: 08/29/2019 03:00:12
