Caiman by Cora Rosenhaft

October 2018 - Caiman

About the Image(s)

I took this image on a rainforest river safari in Costa Rica. There was a lot of rain prior to our tour so the river level was really high. We were still lucky enough to see a couple of caiman basking on the shore of the river despite the high water. It was challenging to get a sharp image because we were on a boat but we were able to get pretty close to the animal and I was able to get this image.

ISO 3200, 300 mm, f 6.3, 1/800 s

Hi Cora, Nice capture, especially at 300mm from a boat. Thing is I'd never heard of a caiman so I looked it up. Comparing pictures from Google, I think this is a baby alligator. The long snout and visible teeth are very different to a caiman.
Anyway it's a great capture, very sharp showing lots of detail and a nice depth of field. None of this easy from a boat. Well done.   Posted: 10/15/2018 06:31:05

We had a very good nature guide. They were definitely caiman. He said there were no alligators there and although there are crocodiles in other parts of the country, they are not found in this particular river.   Posted: 10/31/2018 18:40:13

As Graham said … "Great capture"!! Kind of scary up this close, but a well done portrait. I see nothing that I would change.   Posted: 10/18/2018 09:19:32

Nice capture. Great clarity and detail. I would change nothing.
Being that you have such great detail and clarity I would like to suggest that is is a young crocodile. I say this because caiman are a type of alligator and the crocs have lower front teeth that extend through the upper jaw and are exposed near the nostrils as in your image. Gators and caiman do not. It is also evident that this is a smaller croc due to the size of the grass it is resting on.   Posted: 10/22/2018 17:16:04
