Laundry Day by Tom Brott

October 2018 - Laundry Day

About the Image(s)

We recently spent a couple on nights in Venice, Italy. This was a scene one morning as we left our side street level apartment.

Canon 7D Mark II, f/4.5, 1/160 sec., ISO 1250, 24-70mm lens @ 33mm, auto white balance, hand held.

Adjusted several sliders in PSCC Raw, Brightened mid-tones with levels but could not bring out more definition in the bit of sky that is shown in the upper left.

Hi Tom, nice image which captures the atmosphere of Italian life very nicely. I lived in Italy for three years 1990-1992 before coming to the US. Your photo captures the colorful scenes one can expect in many backstreets. The washing hanging out to dry is still common even in the days of tumble dryers and this adds to the various colors of the surrounding buildings.
The blown out sky is often a hazard in these shots. All I can suggest, if you really want to fix it, is to use Photoshop to select the sky and swap it out for sky from a different shot. But truthfully I like the authenticity of your shot as is. The other elements are so interesting and colorful I'm not at all distracted by the sky. Nice shot and thanks for sharing.   Posted: 10/15/2018 06:43:08

Great street scene! I think the colors of the laundry are the subject of this photo. In response to Graham's comments on the blown out sky, you might just want to try cropping in from the left and eliminate the sky entirely. This would concentrate the image on the laundry and the colors that are there.   Posted: 10/18/2018 09:30:54

I agree with Graham and Alan. Cropping out the left side and sky would enhance this nice image.   Posted: 10/22/2018 20:05:21

I really like this image. They colors are excellent and I like how you captured the essence of a place. I don't think I would crop out the sky because I think that seeing the end of the street adds more than the sky subtracts from the image.   Posted: 10/31/2018 18:54:19
