About the Image(s)
My camera club had a photo shoot at the Philadelphia Insectarium. This butterfly was attracted to the paint colors on the floor. When I took a closer look at the photo, I noticed something coiled up. I think it’s one of the butterfly’s legs. ISO 64, 120mm, F4 1/100 sec.

Slightly out of focus on the antennae and could use some sharpening on the wings. The coiled up thing is a proboscis. It's like a tongue and is what they use to slurp up nectar.   Posted: 03/02/2023 12:33:51
Thanks Paul. I think I needed a higher aperture setting, like F8, to get a larger depth of field.   Posted: 03/02/2023 12:43:13

I like the subject and the composition. The colors are very good. I'm guessing this is hand-held. If I'm correct, you have a steady hand at 120 mm and 1/100 second. F4 doesn't look to have given you enough depth of field, but I still find the image pleasing. I'd love to capture something similar!!!   Posted: 03/02/2023 13:52:32

I like how you got down with the butterfly near the floor for this image. The comments by the others are spot on. Well done.   Posted: 03/03/2023 11:58:23
Thanks Lloyd. Yes I had the camera on the ground and was using the screen to focus. I'm not as good at that yet, which may have contributed to my not seeing that I needed more depth of field.   Posted: 03/03/2023 12:03:43
Love the colors in the flooring! Also learned from Tom about the proboscis! I am impressed that you got this with your camera on floor! How did you get up?😂   Posted: 03/04/2023 09:49:56
Thanks Jamie. The answer is somewhat slowly!! 🤣

Very funny!!! Getting down is easy but for some of us getting back up can be challenging!!!   Posted: 03/07/2023 07:35:25
I used to have a subscription to Butterfly World here in Florida and visited as often as I could to capture them. Love this one. This year I chose the zoo but I have to tell you Butterfly World is more interesting. They are really beautiful creatures and you've more than done this one justice.   Posted: 03/05/2023 14:30:16
Thanks Bev. I have been to butterfly world in Florida. It is wonderful. It's much better than what we have up here in Philadelphia, due to the warmer weather down there. I had a lot of fun trying to get good shots. Challenging but also enjoyable.   Posted: 03/05/2023 14:59:43
Thanks Tom. I'll see what Topaz can do   Posted: 03/07/2023 08:28:14
