SUNSET AT THE RIVER by Jean Armstrong

About the Image(s)

Sunset at the River was taken at the bend of the Sacramento River. I was with friends and had a small Samsung camera with me. I wanted to see what would happen as the sun bent down around the hill. This was the result of my interest in photography. 1/320 sec. f4.7 ISO 100 Love to know what everyone thinks of this amature shot

Jean, I love the effect of the sky in this photo. The layers of clouds and the different colors are beautiful. I also like the effect of the silhouette and the reflection on the river. I found the white spot that was caused by a break in the trees on the hill a little distracting. I might have tried removing it in post processing. Although I really like the image overall, to me it feels like there is too much black space in the bottom right of the frame. I wish the shot could have been just slightly more to the left to add a little more reflection of the river and still have an outline of the hill without so much black.   Posted: 04/05/2021 13:24:28

I agree with Mary about the white being pretty blown out and there being a lot of black. Maybe you could crop more of the black out on the right side. I wish there was more reflection too. Nice idea!   Posted: 04/05/2021 14:26:29

The sky is wonderful and I agree with the other comments. I also wonder if you had been able to open up the shadows in the dark parts, that would have make that part more interesting. However, I'm glad you had a camera and were able to take the shot.   Posted: 04/05/2021 19:37:59

The range of light in this type of image is really hard to get. There may be more details available in the shadows to light up. The only way to correct for the blown out sun area is to use Photoshop to put clouds over the white areas. The silhouette is really nice.   Posted: 04/06/2021 23:34:37
