About the Image(s)
We went up to the Blue Mountains National Park, in NSW Australia for a day trip at the start of this year. The area had been burnt severely in the Black Summer fires of 2019/20 so I was keen to see how the forest was regenerating. Some areas were recovering well while others still had a long way to go. When we got to the lookout at Blackheath, it was lunchtime and the area was covered in fog. I noticed my partner walking up the path and quickly took a shot with my Canon EOS 6D and my EF 24-105mm f/L lens at 25mm, 1/250sec and f5.6. (Into the Unknown_Original). I have both cropped the image and processed it quite a bit to give it a mystical quality inspired by the painting of old Masters as well as some of the lighting effects used in certain movies to create a mystical mood. Most of the processing has been done in Photoshop using curves and masks to lighten and darken the image where it was needed. I have introduced a solid colour fill layer of both yellow and green with a soft light blending mode and finished the image off with a warming filter to create the mood.

Nilmini, based on your comments, I'm wondering if the original and your edited version are backwards. I love the version that is shown as the original. It definitely has a mystical mood.   Posted: 04/04/2021 20:39:03
Thanks Mary. Yes, they are. I will let Bev know.   Posted: 04/04/2021 20:45:41

Fantastic scene - I love it.   Posted: 04/04/2021 20:57:46
Thanks Margaret. It's lovely to come across fog. It certainly adds an ambience to the scene.   Posted: 04/05/2021 18:11:27

I wondered if reversed too. I like them both however!!!!   Posted: 04/05/2021 14:23:47
Thanks Jamie. Yes, they are reversed. I wanted to convey a certain mood with my processing but also to try a square crop.   Posted: 04/05/2021 18:10:50

I like the moodier square cropped image the best, although both are interesting. Well done.   Posted: 04/06/2021 23:36:53
Thanks Lloyd, that's my final edit as you would have gathered from the dialogue. I love creating images in fog.   Posted: 04/06/2021 23:39:57

I prefer your final. Just enough color to not result in a monochrome. I prefer the image as your final as the main subject gives me the feeling of a "lost soul" heading into "who knows where" which your title so aptly conveys.   Posted: 04/17/2021 19:37:44
Thanks Bev. The image shown here as the final is actually the original that I shot. I then processed it with the colour fill blends to create the square image.   Posted: 04/18/2021 18:13:53

I must have posted them wrong. They were not labeled so I guess I assumed that the first one was the original. I will repost now and notify the group to take a second look.   Posted: 04/18/2021 19:05:04
Thanks very much Bev. I labelled the images Into the Unknown_ Original and Into the Unknown_Final. Please let me know how best to name them in the future. Cheers.   Posted: 04/18/2021 19:12:49

You are fine. I guess I got involved in correcting the sizing and it was my goof. Thanks to COVID, I'm beginning to not know what day it is. Sorry it was my fault.   Posted: 04/20/2021 19:35:31
All good. Thank you. Take Care.   Posted: 04/20/2021 19:44:07

That's the whole idea - a great group to try a new idea and learn from each other.   Posted: 04/20/2021 20:37:49

Love the crop and the warming effect. Really tells a story!   Posted: 04/20/2021 17:02:03
Thanks Jamie....I'm glad it resonates with you...   Posted: 04/22/2021 20:02:38

Actually earlier I said I preferred the final...actually after seeing the correct final enlarged, in my opinion it's a much better result.   Posted: 04/20/2021 20:40:21
Thanks Bev...much appreciated..   Posted: 04/22/2021 20:02:51
