About the Image(s)

I caught this image at the San Joaquin Wetlands Preserve in Irvine, CA. My wife and I were birding and a shutterbug told us the bird was around the next bend. I used my Olympus OMD Mi Mark III with a 300 mm fixed telephoto and a 1.4 teleconverter. I used Photoshop to remove some distracting branches. The bird was busy hunting while I was shooting, but the in flight shots did not come out. Oh Well!

Lloyd, it's a great shot! I love all the beautiful detail in the bird, which you have in nice sharp focus. Having tried to get good bird shots using a 200-500mm with a 1.4 teleconverter, I admire your ability. I found it really hard to get a sharp picture with the teleconverter. For me, birds in flight are difficult, especially smaller ones because they fly so fast. The colors are great and you managed to capture all the detail in the head and the eye.   Posted: 02/03/2021 18:38:10

Lloyd, this is a great bird catch. What I'm not overly thrilled with is the background. Have you considered replacing it with a textured background? They work wonders in remaking an image from beautiful to fantastic. See my notes on the previous image re textures.   Posted: 02/05/2021 14:29:35

I will give it a try. However, my feeling is that textures fit better with floral subjects and still live images. I am going for a more Audobon feel. Thanks for your input.   Posted: 02/05/2021 16:32:57

Here is an attempt to give this a different backdrop. It was a grey sky that day.   Posted: 02/17/2021 21:51:55

I love your beautiful bird too. Like Beverly, I would like to see a pale color as a background. I have not have much luck photographing birds! Yours is lovely!   Posted: 02/06/2021 16:56:05

One of my favorite birds - what a great photo of it. The detail is wonderful. It is not quite as bright red as I remember it - did the sun make it more orange or is it my monitor or am I not remembering it correctly. I agree with not using a textured background - it would not fit. Was it a bald sky?   Posted: 02/17/2021 20:43:58

This is an amazing capture. Your shot has amazing detail and clarity. The bright vermillion hue of the bird is highlighted, especially against a simple background. Great shot!   Posted: 02/20/2021 10:31:24
