About the Image(s)

I decided to send one of my tries at abstract this month. I took this several years ago in Fair Haven, NY. It was not focused well so I decided to try to do some things to make it look abstract and then the focus did not matter as much. I used a filter for "glass" effect in Photo Elements. I cropped it some to focus on the one dramatic fuchsia flower. Shot it with my Canon Rebel xti at f/5, 1/100 sec., ISO 400, 77 mm. I love this unusual shrub's two color flower for it's vivid color and shape.

Jamie, I see why you said you were "into abstracts" this month. I love the effect you created. To me, it seems to make the vibrant colors stand out even more. I think it's a very fun idea.   Posted: 02/02/2021 13:07:08

The color palette is lovely and the combination of both crispness and out of focus is very interesting. It looks like a picture taken through a window with water running down it. Fun!   Posted: 02/03/2021 17:17:05

I love the colors in this. I'm not a big fan of abstracts as usual but this one is done very well. Actually in looking at the original to my eyes it's not that soft. If you have it, try taking it into Topaz Sharpen AI. It works wonders. Another option if you have it is to go into Topaz 2 and open up Smudge and sharpen there. Another great sharpening tool. Then, if you haven't done it, try playing with masks. I saw a couple of webinars done by Marie Altenburg (article in the January issue of the PSA Journal on sharpening that will blow your mind. See if you can get your camera club to set up a webinar with her...mariealtenburg.com it is more than the most worthwhile webinar I have ever attended.   Posted: 02/05/2021 14:24:03

Thank you for your suggestions Beverly. I do not have Topaz unfortunately! I will look up Marie Altenburg too.   Posted: 02/05/2021 16:23:43

For me, the vibrant color in this image makes it a standout. The filter you chose is very impressionistic in my opinion, and I think it adds a new level of interest. I also like the way you have cropped it. A new season of blooms is almost here, so you are going to have a lot of subject matter to work with in the coming months. I will look forward to seeing what else you create.   Posted: 02/06/2021 10:35:23

I love the colors and the whole image but don't think it is very abstract. I like your original too and may have just tried some of the suggestions for sharpening it but probably would have just cropped the left and right side to get rid of those out of focus buds.   Posted: 02/17/2021 20:16:43

I actually quite like your original image. But, in terms of creating a more abstract version of it, the edit seems to have done that quite effectively. Very creative, and great colors!   Posted: 02/20/2021 10:26:34

Thanks Emily. My original was just not focused well so this is why I did the "glass" look!   Posted: 02/20/2021 10:36:12

Love the abstract design and I would love to see it on a water color page, I would frame it and display it.   Posted: 02/20/2021 18:27:53
