STONE BRIDGE, FREDERICK, MD by Margaret Sprott, APSA

September 2020 - STONE BRIDGE, FREDERICK, MD

About the Image(s)

Our camera club went on a field trip to Frederick, MD and I was using my Nikon 5300 with a Tamron lens of 18-400mm. This stone bridge is pretty photogenic but I decided to crop it so just the best parts show and there are no extraneous things showing. Shot at 1/200 second at f/9 with a polarizer. I think I post-processed it in Photoshop.

Great colors and a perfect reflection! I was wondering if a little more room around the reflection would be good. Without seeing the whole image, I'm not sure.

I'm not sure. I would have to go back to look but I think there was not much there. Good idea though. If I ever get back to MD, I'll check it out. We live there but have been holing up in our vacation home in PA where it is safer.   Posted: 09/06/2020 21:35:26

Margaret, you mentioned that you cropped the picture. I was thinking maybe backing the crop up just a little around the reflection if it's possible. Where are you in PA? I live just outside Philadelphia.   Posted: 09/06/2020 21:39:45

OK - I'll have to look at that.
We're in Huntingdon which is about 30 miles south of State College where Penn State is. If you are a native Pennsylvanian you undoubtedly know that but I find so many people who don't really know it. I grew up in the Lancaster area and went to nursing school at Lankenau Hospital in Philadelphia (many years ago).   Posted: 09/06/2020 22:47:09

I went back to my original and decreased the exposure in LR and did a little bit more with it before sending it to PS. I'm not sure why I had only used PS before. I did more with shadows and highlights but then left it without cropping. I think I was bothered by the white in the left side and that brown rail in the right. I only had to clone out a little of it when I cropped it a lot. I guess I could have left more at the bottom but I guess I wanted it to be exactly like the top. Anyway, I think I'm including it so you can tell me it it's better this way or what else I could do to it. Thanks!   Posted: 09/14/2020 13:10:09

Mary, I just replied to your comment but must have hit the wrong reply. It is under my previous comment and includes an image if you have time to look at it.   Posted: 09/14/2020 13:13:02

Margaret, Now that I see the whole image, I understand why you cropped it the way you did. I see that there is no more room at the top. Maybe just a little more "breathing room" at the bottom would be good if possible.   Posted: 09/14/2020 14:08:08

Mary,
I see what you mean and agree that it may be better. Do you think I should leave the left and right edges where they are or crop them like I did before? Thanks for discussing this with me.   Posted: 09/14/2020 14:17:43

This is very cool - I like how you captured the reflection of the clock and bridge stonework perfectly. I wonder if there would be a way to draw out some more of the color in the water lilies in the foreground? I see that they might be in the shadow of something outside the frame. So, perhaps that isn't really possible/easy. Regardless - Great shot!   Posted: 09/14/2020 10:33:01

Emily, I added a different image when I replied to Mary and I hope you can look at it to see if I improved those water lilies at all. I must admit I had not noticed them before you pointed them out. There were a lot that day but the lighting was a real problem.   Posted: 09/14/2020 13:16:07

I love reflections! This is so colorful and fun. I do like the crop with a bit more water on the bottom.   Posted: 09/14/2020 15:07:27

Thanks - I'm leaning toward that view too.   Posted: 09/14/2020 15:30:28
