CHICK IN A PLANT by Margaret Sprott, APSA

March 2020 - CHICK IN A PLANT

About the Image(s)

Our club topic this month is macro. I was trying to photograph the center of this plant and was not happy with any of the images so Dick found this little chick and placed it in the center of the plant. Then I was able to us my Nikon 5300 with my Tamron 18-400mm lens set at 400mm. I was able to compose and focus while my husband aimed the attached flash with a tissue over it toward the plant and chick. It took several shots before we got the flash exactly right. In LR I cropped a small amount off the left side and did a few of my usual changes and then did a little vignetting. I learned a little about how to take a macro shot even though I did not have my macro lens with me

The macro effect highlights the contrast between the chick and the leaves. The contrasting colors (yellow, orange) and texture (shiny, plastic, feathered surface) of the chick stand out against the leaves (smooth, mottled shades or green). Your adaptation of the tissue for the flash is a good use available alternative materials.   Posted: 03/08/2020 18:45:24

This is an adorable shot and a heck of a lot more interesting than just the green leaves. Well done and very innovative.   Posted: 03/10/2020 13:33:58

Thank you - my husband was wondering how it would be received so he'll be happy to hear what you thought. I did have fun photographing it.   Posted: 03/10/2020 15:28:39

Good use of your long lens. It shows you do not always need a special macro lens for a close-up.   Posted: 03/16/2020 13:42:58
