WINTER'S BENCH by Sean Sullivan

December 2019 - WINTER'S BENCH

About the Image(s)

I few of us took a night photography trip up to a local lake park and did some winter shoots a few weeks ago. It was cold, wet, and dark. Doing night photography in pitch blackness is difficult to say the least. Biggest challenge is focusing. Having a light source that is relative to the distance to your subject that you can use to set manual focus helps. Having a strong flashlight works sometimes if the subject matter is not too far off. Anyway, I ended up with this exposure shot at f2.8 for 25 seconds with 1600 ISO. I then did some extensive LR, Photoshop and Topaz work and ended up with the final image. At first I had the entire image in very sharp focus but after a while I realized that I wanted to bench to be the subject and blurred the trees. I think this made is a stronger image with more depth. I hope everyone enjoys it. Have a great holiday season.

You really worked hard for this photo and it shows! Night photography is a real challenge. I would also like to see it all sharp like the bench.   Posted: 12/07/2019 20:07:57

Here is the fully sharpened one. I prefer the one I submitted because by blurring the background I feel it gives it more depth. But, some people like this one as well.   Posted: 12/08/2019 10:16:10

Yes, I prefer the sharp one. Both very nice.   Posted: 12/08/2019 12:18:00

You should use this as a Seasons Greeting card! I like the blur effect one but both are great - worth all the work!   Posted: 12/12/2019 13:43:08

Great image! I like the sharp one best because I always like sharpness. However, the one with the blured trees does make the bench stand out more so you accomplished your goal.   Posted: 12/15/2019 07:33:31
