Chalk Artist by W. Neil Jones

October 2019 - Chalk Artist

About the Image(s)

Chrystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville Arkansas hoisted a Chalk Festival in 2019. About a dozen chalk artist drew works of art on sidewalks of the grounds over the duration a the event. I followed this artist of the course of the weekend and tried to capture her concentration as she worked with the chalk on the floor of a covered parking area. Her colorful tattoos added interest, but I felt the overall image worked best in black and white.

Nice image. I've done quite a number of images here when they have the Sidewalk Painting in Lake Worth and found them to be very interesting and photographic.   Posted: 10/04/2019 15:05:45

I really like this image and agree it looks great in black and white.   Posted: 10/04/2019 16:49:41

Neil, the first thing I notice is the triangle shape formed by the artist's arms and body position. I find this to be a very strong compositional element - looking at master works of art I see this shape used a lot. She appears to be very intent on her work. Her body art is very attractive. I wish I could see more of what is in her left hand...is it a box of chalk? The light appears to be coming from a side window on the right and it has brought out the detail in her tattoos and in her hand. You monochome conversion is well-done in my opinion.   Posted: 10/06/2019 12:09:39

Sharon, Thank you for your comments. The left hand is holding reference drawing of the orginal art work. I did not include it because I wanted to crop closer on the subject and felt constrained by the maximum size of the image.   Posted: 10/06/2019 19:26:23

I love the composition and was drawn by the lines created by her body and arms. I also love the black and white and just enjoyed the whole image and did not spend much time analyzing it.   Posted: 10/07/2019 08:39:15
