About the Image(s)

This was a photo taken while wandering the Streets of Barcelona, Spain. I simply liked the street scene with the filigreed bridge crossing the alley way and the people on the street to give the image an economy of scale. It spoke to me of everyday life in another city in the world, also to continue to expand my photographic horizons.

I chose this look stepping outside of the box as a trial and also to see what everyone would think of it “ essentially taking the saturation to 0 (B&W) then converting to a negative in On1 Photo Raw 2021. I like the ghostly feel of the image. I have had some trouble with Photoshop on my iMac and so I am seeking to learn On1. It will take some getting used to, but overall I think I will like the program.

I will be interested in your thoughts on it “ thank you

Well, you've certainly taken the scene to another level with this processing, Ed, and dealt with some harsh lighting that you were presented with. The effect on the two men in front, is particularly interesting! Beyond that however, it starts to have the effect of a filter, by which I mean its the first thing that comes into my head when I see the image. I think this is where opacity and blending of filter effects might be played with to improve the end result. But I definitely see and appreciate what you were after, and it works on a certain level.   Posted: 02/06/2021 17:34:30

Thanks Jack. I appreciate your thoughts on the composition. To be honest what you mentioned is what actually attracted me to the concept behind the image. While you are right about the filter - I wanted to keep the appearance of what I would have seen in a B&W Negative from a film Camera. Still it bears some thought and perhaps modifying the presentation in the future. Thanks again.

Hi Ed, this is an exiting image that makes me think of Barcelona in an alternative reality. I wonder if it would be worth while to darken the bright spots on the right wall (original shadows).I think they may draw the eye a bit from the people and the street. Then there would be only the bright horizontal leading lines on the walls. What do you think?   Posted: 02/07/2021 17:18:43

They bothered me as well, but I chose to leave them. However, on second reflection, I think you are right Kristi. Thank you. I will see what I can do, though I have had issues with PS on my Mac. Perhaps I can learn to do that in ON1.   Posted: 02/07/2021 17:21:53

Your futuristic image is very interesting, Ed. I really like the architectural aspect of the narrow street. It definitely reminds me of a film negative so has an unsettling effect on me, the viewer, which perhaps is your intention.   Posted: 02/10/2021 16:38:14

It is unsettling and that was my intention. I also wanted branch out from standard processing concepts to explore more esoteric ideas. Not all will work and I accept that. This was to see what others thought and I appreciate the comments all have made. It is an idea I want to continue to explore so there may be more in the future.   Posted: 02/23/2021 11:11:38

This is very interesting I would crop the top right down to the arch of the bridge.   Posted: 02/19/2021 15:00:09

Thanks Albert. Well worth the consideration. I would like to keep all of the detail of the bridge, not just the lower arch as I find the upper covered lovel every bit as interesting. However I can also see how it divides the viewers attention between the detail of the bridge and the street scene. Thanks again.   Posted: 02/23/2021 11:14:13

Think about two pictures instead of one?   Posted: 02/23/2021 11:18:04

I like it, thanks. Actually had not occurred to me. Evidence I still have a lot to learn.   Posted: 02/23/2021 11:19:25
