White Pocket by Jack Florence Jr

October 2020 - White Pocket

About the Image(s)

If you go to White Pocket, consider taking one of the overnight tours, as the regular tours, like I did, get you there well after the best light. Here, lacking good light or an interesting sky, I found this Silver fx preset gave a nightime look, so I added in a moon - something I don't normally do! But just having a bit of fun.

Jack - I couldn't resist a quick reply to your posting this month as I recognised immediately where your image was taken from - and from a Brit who has only been to USA about 8 times, that's something! White Pocket is a rarely visited controlled area, accessible really by specialised 4x4s down miles of uneven tracks close to Utah/Arizona border.

Anyway - Your skill in adding the moon certainly adds extra interest to this image, which works very well in B&W. I like your image very much.

Here is one I took in September 2013, which I call Brain Rocks at sunrise. I am sure you will know of this little valley with a sole tree. I haven't yet used this image, but I may try in the near future.   Posted: 10/04/2020 08:47:31

Thanks Adrian, and I like your take as well, the closer in presentation shows more detail in the "moonscape". It certainly is quite a place!   Posted: 10/04/2020 10:09:53

I love the tree growing in the rocky landscape, Adrian. You should definitely use the image. Well done for making it there.   Posted: 10/12/2020 16:22:11

Jack, you did a wonderful job in your composition. I could not tell that the moon was not part of the original image. To my eye a really good job.

I would love to come up with a helpful suggestion or two, but as I see you have covered all of the bases so I have nothing to add or suggest.

Thank you very much for sharing it with us.   Posted: 10/07/2020 13:07:41

Jack,
I agree that adding the moon provides a point of focus which helps this image greatly. Without it one is left only with the patterns in the rocks but I think there is not sufficient detail to appreciate the textures. For me your image creates an other planetary experience. Thanks for sharing.

White Pocket looks fascinating! The moon really brings a focus to the picture, Jack. I would never have guessed you added it. I am sure the rocks must be good in color as well.
Many thanks for an interesting image.   Posted: 10/12/2020 16:54:21

This is a nice image Jack. I agree, adding the moon makes the shot and you merged the two images very well. I'm not sure that the shadows on the rocks matches the angle of the moon light, if that should be a concern.
