Lifting Fog by Albert Zabin

September 2020 - Lifting Fog

About the Image(s)

This was taken with a Nikon D200, probably f11 and converted to B&W with Silver EFEX. I was walking on the beach at Reid Site Park in Maine after a summer storm had passed. This sailing ship (which I later learned was a reproduction of a War of 1812 privateer, Pride of Baltimore, appeared out of the fog. I followed it along the beach and took many pictures of it. This is one of my favorites. In photoshop, I enhanced the fog by sharpening and increasing the contrast in the foreground and reducing the contrast and blurring slightly the ship and background.

I like this composition a lot. I have loved the sea since my time in the Navy having spent many days on the ocean aboard ship. I like the way the white in the waves gives me a sense of great lighting.

I think that it might have been a better for me (as I study it) presentation had you lightened the sailing ship a little more. To me , it is really (or I want it to be) the focal point of the image, but it is so dark that it does not fulfill that role for me. In fact the waves catch and hold my attention more than the ship does since they stand out so starkly.

I am not sure if you cropped the image, but if you did perhaps also giving a little more room between the ship and the right side of the image but I cannot be sure since the ship is so indistinct.

I really like your concept here and would love to see another rendition of this image. Thank you for sharing it with us Albert.   Posted: 09/04/2020 23:19:20

Like Ed, I really like what you were after here Albert, but find the ship is rendered just a bit too dark. Or that it blends in with the background sky just a bit too much. If you are so inclined, I think tweaking this just a bit could improve an already interesting image.   Posted: 09/05/2020 18:29:52

Albert,
Its nice to see a 1812 privateer under full sail on the open ocean! For me there is too much brightness and detail in the waves and not enough detail in the boat. The lighting conditions appear to be challenging but I commend your attempt.

I really like the mysterious ship in the mist Albert. I am glad you took several pictures, as I can see many other versions with just the ship alone or with just one of the waves. Your treatment of the fog really adds to the sense of mystery.   Posted: 09/13/2020 13:01:06

This is a really nice composition Albert! I think it might be improved by brightening up the sky and increasing the contrast of the ship. To me the ship gets lost in the very dark background.
With that said it's a great image.   Posted: 09/21/2020 08:03:09
