Sand Dunes by Jack Florence Jr

June 2020 - Sand Dunes

About the Image(s)

I'm a believer in less is more, and when shooting sand dunes I often try to distill an image down to the most basic shapes and forms. This was processed in Silver Fx to bring out the detail in the sand ripples. As in last month's image, this is a low contrast subject, hopefully the rendition works for you.

Very nice image Jack. The zig-zag diagonals create a leading line to take your eye through the image. I agree, the simplicity of the image is it's strongest point for me.
Well done.   Posted: 06/07/2020 20:02:28

A wonderful abstract. The composition is very strong, I particularly like the very bright highlighted segment and the conflicting lines of the wind ripples of the first dune and the second and third.   Posted: 06/11/2020 17:36:36

This is an interesting mix of patterns and textures. At issue for my eyes is the large, almost featureless white wedge that goes right into the middle of the image. That portion is so bright that it demands my attention, yet as I look at it there is little that actually holds my attention.

To my eye I would have liked to see that portion toned down in order for the texture of that section to be more pronounced.

Thank you for sharing it with us.   Posted: 06/11/2020 19:25:52

I really enjoy the different textures of the sand and the parallel and intersecting lines of the sand dunes. It has, for me, a meditative quality. A lovely image, thank you.   Posted: 06/19/2020 17:56:46

I'm with Ed Jack, in finding that the centre right area is so bright that my eye went straight to that area and struggles to take in the wonderful variety of effects in each area. I agree that the bright area has a part to play and an important part, but it's contribution, I feel would be maximised toned down somewhat.

I think you have a really interesting study hee Jack and thank you for posting it.   Posted: 06/21/2020 12:06:15

Jack,
This is a nicely balanced composition with each dune having a different texture and pattern in the sand. I like how the third due stands out in the sun and that the curves of this dune lead to a point positioned by the rule of thirds. Excellent choice for a monochrome and very good exposure and development in my opinion. Thanks for sharing this one.
