English Sports Field by Jen Carrick

September 2019 - English Sports Field

About the Image(s)

This was taken on a visit to Hampshire England. The field is mainly used for cricket or, on this day, for soccer.
I was attracted by the clouds

I converted the image to black and white in LR, adjusted the sliders and took it into Topaz De Noise. Do you find the image still too noisy?

To the contrary, Jen, it almost has a minimalist feel to it. I find when taking nice cloudscapes like this, the challenge to be finding a ground subject which has some interest but doesn't compete with the sky, and this works very well. The bright whites of the goal posts really make this pop, and the image as a whole has a nice tonal range. Very nicely done.   Posted: 09/08/2019 09:50:13

It is a very interesting image to me. In and of itself the field and the soccer goals are okay. What, to my eye. makes this image so dynamic is the sky making it, to me, a very strong image.

I really have no suggestions for improvement. It is a very nice image to me, thank you for sharing it with us.   Posted: 09/12/2019 17:42:47

Jen,
The first thing that attracted me to your image was the clouds and they seem very well separated from the trees. Since the soccer field is such a prominent part of the image, I wish there were some activity on it which would greatly increase the impact and help me to create memories of my younger days. If you were able to take this image during a cricket match that would make for a more exotic feel, at least for me.

The picture suggests, by the symmetry and cleanly cut grass that something is about to happen and the clouds suggest the something will be a monumental contest. Nice work. Anticipation can be as engaging as conflict.   Posted: 09/15/2019 18:39:03

Hampshire is my county Jen! Or at least is now having moved here 3 years ago from Yorkshire. I love the calmness of your image and the sort of linkage between the white clouds and goal posts. I also like the directional line from the side bar of the near goal area, leading to the 2nd goal.

The only suggestions I have are to darken the fencing just to the right of the near goal (to help the eye travel to the next goal) and remove the bird to simplify the image even more. Your image is a nice example of a 'less is more' photo. Thank you for posting it.   Posted: 09/18/2019 09:21:34

Yes I have links to Hampshire and Yorkshire too! I did not even notice the fence so thanks for the hint. I dont mind the Bird but you were the second person to say Get rid of it!   Posted: 09/18/2019 11:27:46

Excellent exposure and processing Jen: You have created an image with great depth and detail. I cannot suggest much to improve it... get rid of the bird.
Well done.   Posted: 09/18/2019 11:14:40
