Gannet Rookery Tower by Albert Zabin

March 2019 - Gannet Rookery Tower

About the Image(s)

My picture shows a major roost for gannets (a sea bird) related to the boobies. The photo was taken with aa zoom wide angle lens F/11, at27mm, ISO 250. This was taken in the West shore near Aukland. I darkened the sky and increased the contrast overall using the contrast slider and the black and white and shadow sliders. I sharpened in LR to 100%. I converted to B&W with Silver Efex 2 using the fine art preset. I increased the contrast and boosted the structure.. Turned on the filter (orange) and enhanced the structure.

A very simple scene, made special by the outcropping, which you've placed just right, to make for an interesting composition. I like what you've done with the clouds. The birds, which make for nice balancing white tones, I find later, and all in all it comes together for a nicely presented scene with good contrast and tonality.   Posted: 03/10/2019 16:06:56

That is a lot of birds in that rookery. You present a fairly calm easy scene in what must have been a noisy place to be. As Jack mentioned the tones and contrast are very nice.

You must have a lot of great material from New Zealand. Thank you for sharing an atypical scene to me from New Zealand.   Posted: 03/10/2019 21:28:14

Albert, I really like this image but I see the clouds much as I did the clouds in Sharon's image being distracting from the beautiful scene. You did a great job with the bottom 2/3 of the image, well composed and great processing.

The light on the sea is very well captured, Albert and brings my eye up to the clouds, which I feel complete the image. It is a quiet peaceful scene, and really make me want to be there.   Posted: 03/11/2019 13:30:06

Hi Albert,

Not much I can add to what has already been said. A very nice image whose restful appearance probably belies the noise of the rookery. To my eye the clouds add to the image.

Thank you for sharing it with us.   Posted: 03/11/2019 14:04:50
