Palace Garde, Kyoto by Albert Zabin

October 2018 - Palace Garde, Kyoto

About the Image(s)

A garden of one of the historic “palaces” in Kyoto. Taken with a Nikon 3100 adapted for infra red. This is almost a straight shot. I darkened the pine tree in the foreground and lightened the foliage of the tree in the background It was a lovely scene. Not much color--green foliage grey and brown rocks and water. I tried to capture the forms , but I am not pleased with the result.

I found myself struggling to decide what to say about the image. For my part, I actually like the scene. I finally decided that what was bothering me was that the whites were (to my eye) too bright. They had the appearance (to me) of demanding "LOOK AT ME!", taking my eye away from the rest of the image.

I copied the image and took it into PSCC to make some adjustments to exposure - both with gamma and offset. I made some further adjustments to the whites, highlights and contrast using the Camera Raw Filter. I do not know if what I did will help you like it more, but …   Posted: 10/06/2018 14:16:24

Hello Albert,
I agree with Ed's comments on the whites and like his darkened version. I can see a cropped 1:1 version that may be OK. This reminds me of the asian gardens at our local arboretum. I understand wanting to get it all in but the upper central tree and fence seem distracting to me. See if you like a square version.

I agree with the other's comments, and especially like the direction that Sharing is going, as in less is more, in that the original was including just too much. Sharon's crop lets me enjoy the most interesting part of the image.   Posted: 10/07/2018 12:54:01

Thanks for the comments. I think Ed is absolutely right about the tone balance. Took another shot similar to Sharon's suggestion. The photo needs more thought and work   Posted: 10/08/2018 14:55:56

I really like your capture of the water Albert. I also love those trees, so common in Japan, but hard to render accurately. It seems to me it is a vertical shot but I can see the virtue of Sharon's square version.   Posted: 10/08/2018 20:56:54

I agree, the square crop improves the image. I would like to have seen the water with a longer shutter speed. It would have softened the water and given it a more peaceful effect.
great image
