Arc de Triomphe, Paris. by John Garbalinski

June 2018 - Arc de Triomphe, Paris.

About the Image(s)

Camera: Rolleicord Vb, Lens: Xenar, Film: TX400 (black white), Speed: 1/125, F=11. No filter, no tripod. The camera is light and compact. Good for travel. Film cameras require different way of thinking about photography. First of all you don't see much trough the view finder. To get things sharp is not easy at F3.6. I use F11 or F8 to get better DOF. Then I had to develop film in Rodinal, scan it. A lot of work. Unfortunately the image lost a lot of detail when compressing to 1MB. If you want to see it "in better shape" please visit my FB site.

The Arc is certainly magnificent in so many ways. For the Arc itself, to my eye, you captured it very nicely with good detail even in this version of the image. I also really like the tonality of the image. It is detailed yet also more subtle in it tones - is it the effect of film vs. digital?

My one issue with the image is the cars and motor bikes at the bottom. For me they detract from the magnificence of the Arc. I know it would be difficult to get an image without them, still they do lessen the overall effect for me.

I am glad that someone else in the group uses film from time to time, I do not feel like the only "dinosaur" left in Photography :-)

Thank you for sharing it with us.   Posted: 06/09/2018 20:01:09

I agree with Ed's comments -- well presented, too bad about the cars. I like the angle from which you've captured it.   Posted: 06/10/2018 12:58:59

I think it might have been better to have included the whol car rather than cutting them off at the wheels The bdranches and the other object in the top left are more distracting to me. These triumphal arches are tough to photograph. I hae a few of the Brandnburg gate in Berlin. I think they are pretty unsatisfactory   Posted: 06/12/2018 20:17:10

Your image makes me really look at this familiar Parisian landmark with new eyes. To me the traffic is an inescapable part of the scene, so it does not bother me. I wonder how it would be shot at a slow speed so the traffic is blurred in contrast to the architectural detail of the Arc?   Posted: 06/18/2018 15:23:09

Thank you, All.   Posted: 06/19/2018 03:18:04

The cars don't help the image at all. Maybe if you had backed up a little to include more of the overall scene.
I like the angle of the shot. Most shots are from the front so this is a little different.
Using film, well done.   Posted: 06/22/2018 10:09:59

Well, to get photo at this location without cars is not possible. It is the busiest place in Paris.   Posted: 06/22/2018 10:24:10
