About the Image(s)

This was taken in the Bad Lands of South Dakota in mid-June. We were lucky to have a brief squall line come through creating an unusual sky.
I found the Bad Lands to be a difficult subject when trying to get a good composition.
I used Silver Efex to convert it to black and white. Shot with Canon 7d mii, 24-105 lens at 24mm, f4 at 1/60sec, ISO 100.

Don,
Nicely done. I think maybe a little more f stop could give it enough depth to pull in flowers at the bottom ? Possibly more contrast to give it just a bit more drama to fit the weather.
Dramatic location, now I want to go there !   Posted: 07/10/2017 14:39:14

Yet another wonderful image. To me that has all the elements of a great landscape shot. Interesting foreground, mid-ground, and back ground. The sky is striking and I find a do not mind the high key nature asa submitted.

In my case this is nit picking, but I do think that a half stop darker with more contrast (a little, very little) would really make this image pop. None-the-less, I think this is a very good image very well displayed.

Thank you for sharing it with us.   Posted: 07/13/2017 23:22:43

Darrell and Ed...
Thanks for your kind words. I knew there was a problem when I saw the image on my phone. I have my monitor set up for printing and I have to allow for that when sending something digitally. My problem.
You are correct a little more dof would have been nice.   Posted: 07/14/2017 16:35:30

I agree with the others, in that a little darker, a little more contrast, and a bit more DOF might improve what is already a very nice landscape.

I too like skies like this. Vertical landscapes are somewhat unusual, and can be difficult to pull off, but in this case the image flows very well across the layers.

Depending on how close you were to the foreground flowers, it may not have been possible to get the whole scene sharp with any aperture. It might have been necessary to bracket, or if you were further away, use a longer lens which compresses the image.   Posted: 07/15/2017 11:01:00

I really like the layers and leading lines of your composition, Don.
I agree with the other opinions about adding more contrast. It is a lovely and peaceful scene. Thanks for reminding us of the National Parks this anniversary year   Posted: 07/15/2017 21:09:16

I agree, DOF should be from the lens to horizon but it is not always possible. I suggest, use tripod which is of course large and heavy but the only solution.   Posted: 07/18/2017 11:29:16
