I have never seen a white Great Blue Heron. A first glance, I thought this was a B/W photo. Is the heron really white? Over-exposed? Otherwise, this is a good photo with space to the left of the bird, no dead space and nothing to distract from the subject.   Posted: 02/02/2021 09:47:09

I wondered, too, about the color of the bird. My conclusion after checking with Sibley is that this is a tropical variation from the grey color seen in the north.   Posted: 02/04/2021 13:26:44

This is a excellent shot - very well composed. With respect to the color, I prefer under-saturation to over-saturation these days, but perhaps this shot might actually have more impact as a B&W. I would also have darkened some of the branches in the background to make the heron stand out better. And, I would definitely clone out the branch sticking out of the heron's head. Maybe, something like this.   Posted: 02/02/2021 10:15:42

Something is not right with this website. I keep trying to post one thing, and something else is posted instead. Not sure what is happening. I'm trying a third time.   Posted: 02/04/2021 13:48:41

This may be one of my favorite of your photos. Very well captured. Your choice of under saturating the scene is an interesting one. I like it, however, I think I like the pure monochrome and background darkening that David did. It really makes the heron "pop".   Posted: 02/02/2021 10:42:04

I thought of monochrome but didn't want to lose the characteristic orange-yellow color of the bill.   Posted: 02/10/2021 16:06:17

I'm with David, darken the surrounding as he posted, or blur them.   Posted: 02/04/2021 15:25:33

Wonderful capture of the Heron! I like your composition with the Heron on the right side of the scene. I also like David's edit with removal of branches around the edge of the bird and darkening of the background over all.   Posted: 02/17/2021 06:56:51

Very nice to capture of a great blue heron in the wild. The feathers in the body and neck are crystal clear. The background bushes are too distraction to me. I also agree that to darken or to blur the background would make some improvement.   Posted: 02/28/2021 06:02:12

The background mess is a photographic distraction, I agree. But it's the jungle!!   Posted: 02/28/2021 10:09:46
