Night Scene of Kaohsiung Harbor by Bai Chuang Shyu

December 2020 - Night Scene of Kaohsiung Harbor

About the Image(s)

I visited the Kaohsiung Medical University for a student oral examination. Kaohsiung Is a harbor city in the south of Taiwan. In the evening I took ferry to the Qijing. Qijin is a long and narrow island. Although Qijin is a small area, there are many attractive places. After taking a delicious sea food dinner with my wife, we climbed to a small hill with light house. Here we could have a paranormal view of entire night scene of Kaohsiung harbor. My Nikon D810 is on a tripod, with 3 second, f/14 and an ISO of 1250. 3 seconds exposure could catch a small segment of light trails of the ferry boat. But the ISO if 1250 produce too much noises. Post processing was done in Photoshop to de-noise the darkened sky and finally cropped.

Another very moody night scene especially with the hint of fog in the harbor. I like the sunstars of the bright lights. I don't know whether the light trails of the ferry work very well. It might have better to use a higher ISO to stop the ferry even though it would have created more digital noise. It's rather easy to eliminate noise in images these days.   Posted: 12/02/2020 10:18:52

Another pretty harbor scene, Bai. I like all the colors, sharpness and "Star-burst" lights. But for me, the lights of the ferry are not helpful. I can't tell what it is, there is not enough definition. And the sky looks "muddy", almost as if a fog is settling in. I zoomed in a bit and thought moving in was an option to make the image more pleasing to me.   Posted: 12/02/2020 13:04:57

I wonder about the effect of a much longer exposure using a ND filter, or even stacked filteres.   Posted: 12/07/2020 18:11:00

You do such a great job with night scenes. There is so much to like about this one - the starburst of light, the touch of green lit up on the right. I agree with the comments above that the lights on the ferry detract from the image since they are not as sharp, defined as the other lights. If you cloned it out, however, there would be a large negative space that I don't think would work either. Perhaps, your image is the right side of this frame.   Posted: 12/08/2020 07:44:22

nice night scene! how's the air in Kaohsiung, love the night markets! miss that
I read the comments, and tried a few different crop and positioning, if the original is best suit for you, then partial darken the ferry would be a simple thing to try it out, see if you'd like it better or not...   Posted: 12/18/2020 09:56:44

The busy harbor scene is filled with life and light! So picturesque. I also think the ferry is distracting since it is was moving and it is blurred. I like the idea of the crop because it brings your eye to the nice grouping of buildings that is on the right.   Posted: 12/19/2020 07:06:24
